Workshops for Children
Adjusting to life in Israel can be difficult for all age groups. As adults we realize the impact of this major transition and choose to make Aliyah, while our children are bound by the decisions we make for them and for the family as a whole. Although children adapt rapidly to almost any situation, they deal with the changes differently than their parents.
The objective of the workshop is to provide children with the opportunity to explore their feelings and attitudes regarding their move to Israel and to strengthen their coping skills. They will be able to identify their own stressors and understand different ways to deal with them in situations outside the group. Throughout the sessions they will learn to use assertion skills and identify their own strengths to develop a positive self-concept and raise their self esteem.
Different counseling techniques are used such as art, role playing, and problem-solving techniques. The group provides a safe and accepting environment that offers support and promotes a sense of belonging.
The workshop consists of six weekly sessions and focuses on the children's own experience of Aliyah. It is designed to meet the needs of children and pre-teens according to their developmental stage and it is offered by group ages: 6-7 year olds, 8-10 year olds, and 11-13 year olds.
Issues and topics:
- Assertiveness
- Developing positive self-esteem
- Coping skills
- Identity and belonging
- Cultural clashes (with peers, parents, themselves)
